DC vs DCC: What is the Difference?
A practical guide to the two most common ways to power and control a model railroad.
Two ways to bring your railroad to life
DC and DCC both control model trains, but they do it in very different ways. Understanding the difference makes it easier to choose equipment that fits how you want to run your layout.
Traditional DC
Direct current, or DC, sends power through the rails. A throttle changes the voltage and polarity, which changes the speed and direction of the locomotive.
- Simple to understand and get started with
- Often the most affordable choice
- Best suited to one train per electrical block
Digital Command Control
DCC keeps a constant digital signal on the rails. Decoders inside the locomotives listen for commands, so you can control multiple trains independently on the same track.
- Run several locomotives independently
- Control lights, sound, and other functions
- Requires a command station and decoders
Which should you choose?
Choose DC if you want the simplest path to running one train. Choose DCC if independent operation, sound, and future expansion are important to you. Many modern locomotives are available with DCC and sound installed, while others can be upgraded later.
